The Military Nursing Service is the nursing wing of the Indian Armed Forces. MNS officers are commissioned officers — not civilian nurses — holding full military rank, pay, privileges, and responsibilities equivalent to regular Indian Army officers. They serve in Army hospitals, command hospitals, field medical units along India’s borders, military research institutes, and on United Nations peacekeeping missions internationally.
The nursing services of the Indian Army trace their origins to 1888 under the British Indian Army. The service was formally reorganized and officially established as the Indian Military Nursing Service (IMNS) in 1926. After independence it was renamed the Military Nursing Service and continues to operate under the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS). Today it is the oldest uniformed nursing organisation for women in India.
MNS recruits female nursing professionals through two main entry routes: the B.Sc. Nursing course entry for Class 12 students via NEET-UG, and the Short Service Commission (SSC) entry for B.Sc. or M.Sc. Nursing graduates via a Computer-Based Test conducted by NTA under the aegis of DGAFMS.

Candidates apply through joinindianarmy.nic.in. Initial shortlisting is based on NEET-UG scores and Class 12 academic merit.
Stage 2 — TOGIGE Test (B.Sc. Entry) or CBT (SSC Entry).
For the B.Sc. entry route, shortlisted candidates appear for the Test of General Intelligence and General English (TOGIGE) — a Computer-Based Test of 40 MCQs carrying 2 marks each, totalling 80 marks, to be completed in 30 minutes. There is negative marking of 0.5 marks for every wrong answer.
For the SSC entry route, candidates appear for a Computer-Based Test (CBT) conducted by NTA under the aegis of DGAFMS. The CBT consists of MCQs on Nursing, General English, and General Intelligence. Qualifying marks are 50%. There is no negative marking in the SSC CBT.
Stage 3 — Psychological Assessment.
A psychometric test assessing personality traits, leadership potential, and suitability for military service, held alongside or shortly after the written test.
Stage 4 — Interview.
Those who successfully qualify both the written examination and the psychometric evaluation are called to face a panel of senior military officers at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment. The interview assesses communication, confidence, clinical knowledge, current affairs awareness, and motivation to serve. Extra weightage is given to candidates with achievements in sports and to wards of serving or ex-servicemen. The process spans 3 to 5 days.
Stage 5 — Medical Examination. A comprehensive medical fitness examination at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt. Candidates declared unfit may appeal within 24 hours by depositing a nominal fee of ₹40 for an Appeal Medical Board (AMB). The AMB decision is final.
Stage 6 — Final Merit List and Joining. The final merit list is prepared combining NEET scores + TOGIGE or CBT scores + Interview performance, subject to medical fitness. Selected candidates receive offer letters and joining instructions.

Master Nursing Fundamentals. Build strong command over Medical-Surgical Nursing, Community Health, Anatomy and Physiology, and Pharmacology using standard B.Sc. Nursing textbooks.
Strengthen English and Reasoning. These are high-scoring sections with predictable question types. Practise from standard competitive exam books and read an English newspaper daily.
Time-Bound Mock Tests. Simulate exam conditions weekly. depends equally on how quickly you answer and how correctly you answer. Analyse every wrong answer thoroughly.
Interview Preparation. Stay current on defence news, healthcare policy, and Indian Army developments. Work on posture, communication, and articulation well before the interview.
Physical Fitness from Day One. Running, yoga, and strength training must begin alongside academic preparation. Physical conditioning is assessed throughout training.
Official Sources Only. Monitor joinindianarmy.nic.in and nta.ac.in regularly. Always verify eligibility and dates directly from the official notification.

Conclusion
The Military Nursing Service offers a career that is genuinely rare — one that combines professional excellence in healthcare with the honour and purpose of commissioned military service. The benefits, the diversity of postings, the rank structure, and the lifetime security make MNS one of the most comprehensive career packages available to women in India. For any female candidate with a passion for nursing and a desire to serve the nation, MNS is a career worth every effort of preparation.

Key change from 2024 to 2025
The selection process for the B.Sc. entry route was updated in 2025. The written test component was renamed and restructured as TOGIGE (Test of General Intelligence and General English) — a new format similar to AFCAT and CDS level tests — replacing the earlier simpler CBT format. This change increased the rigour of the English and reasoning components significantly. Candidates preparing for 2026 should prepare specifically for this TOGIGE format.

Q1. What is the Military Nursing Service and who is eligible?
A1. The Military Nursing Service is the nursing corps of the Indian Armed Forces, with origins in 1888 and formally restructured in 1926. MNS officers hold gazetted commissioned officer ranks — not civilian nursing posts. Only female Indian citizens qualify. For B.Sc. entry: age 17–25, 10+2 with PCB and English, minimum 50% aggregate in first attempt, NEET-UG qualified. For SSC entry: age 21–35, B.Sc. or M.Sc. Nursing from an INC-recognised university, valid State Nursing Council registration.
Q2. Is NEET mandatory for joining MNS?
A2. NEET-UG is mandatory only for the B.Sc. Nursing entry route, where it serves as the primary shortlisting criterion for the four-year programme at AFMS Colleges of Nursing. Candidates who already hold a B.Sc. or M.Sc. Nursing degree apply through the SSC direct entry route via a Computer-Based Test conducted by NTA under DGAFMS — no NEET required.
Q3. What is the MNS selection process?

Stage 1 — Online application and NEET shortlisting
Stage 2 — TOGIGE test (B.Sc. entry) or NTA CBT (SSC entry)
Stage 3 — Psychological Assessment Test
Stage 4 — Interview, Board of Officers, Base Hospital Delhi Cantt (3–5 days)
Stage 5 — Medical Examination, appeal within 24 hours at ₹40
Stage 6 — Final merit list, offer letter, joining instructions

TOGIGE — Test of General Intelligence and General English — was introduced from MNS 2025 for B.Sc. entry candidates. It has 40 MCQs, 2 marks each, totalling 80 marks, completed in 30 minutes. Negative marking of 0.5 per wrong answer applies. Difficulty is comparable to AFCAT and CDS level. SSC entry candidates appear for the NTA CBT instead, which carries no negative marking.
Q5. What is the salary of an MNS officer?
A5. On commissioning as a Lieutenant, an MNS officer draws a starting basic pay of ₹56,100 per month under the 7th Central Pay Commission pay matrix at Level 10.

Military Service Pay: ₹15,500 flat for all officers regardless of rank
Dearness Allowance: linked to basic pay, revised every quarter by the Government
House Rent Allowance: 8% to 27% of basic pay based on city category, or free government accommodation in lieu
Transport Allowance: varies by posting city

The Basic Military Nursing Course is mandatory pre-commissioning training exclusively for SSC entry nursing graduates. Conducted at Army College of Nursing, Pune or Jalandhar, it runs approximately 11 weeks and covers military etiquette, field nursing, emergency triage, physical training, ward management, and military law. On completion, candidates are commissioned as Lieutenants with full officer pay. B.Sc. entry candidates instead complete the full government-funded four-year B.Sc. Nursing programme at their allocated AFMS College.
Q7. What is the MNS rank and promotion structure?
