The Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) founded the Army Institute of Fashion & Design (AIFD) in Bangalore in 2004 as a leading institute for fashion education. It offers quality education in Fashion and Interior Design to dependents of both serving and retired Army personnel. AIFD is one of twelve leading institutes managed by AWES, which also oversees 137 Army Public Schools and 249 Army Pre-Primary Schools nationwide. EDUCATION AND CURRICULUM
The Army Institute of Fashion & Design is a unique higher education institution that focuses on design, a field that enhances soft skills and fosters innovation. Designers at AIFD work closely with technologists and inventors to create user-friendly and innovative products. Every year, new fashion professionals and interior and space designers are emerging. Indian designers, who have a rich heritage in textiles, architecture, and craftsmanship, are gaining international recognition. They are setting new goals and effectively using social media.
The apparel industry, being the second-largest industry in India, employs millions of people. With its impressive growth, the industry has started implementing sustainable practices. Designers are slowing down production, rethinking their design practices, and incorporating sustainable practices into their design models. They are not just creative but also technically skilled. The modern designer needs to be research-oriented and socially conscious. AIFD collaborates with the best in the industry. It provides students with additional information through specialized lectures, workshops, and industry interactions. FACILITIES AT AIFD
The Army Institute of Fashion & Design (AIFD) offers a comprehensive range of facilities to its students. It has two Patternmaking & Sewing Labs with advanced industrial sewing machines and computerized sewing machines for specialized tasks. The labs also have pattern-making tables and dress forms for drafting patterns or draping designs. The CAD/IT Lab has over 50 PC systems, including 40 dedicated to design applications with software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Corel Draw. The lab also provides specialized training in GERBER, CAD, and ERP.
The Quality Control Lab is equipped with high-end machines to conduct quality tests for fiber, yarn, fabric, garments, and accessories. AIFD also boasts a Visual Merchandising & Draping Lab, a Fashion Photography Lab with the latest equipment and cameras, and a Dyeing & Finishing Lab with chemical testing facilities and a 12 kg capacity fabric and garment dyeing machine. The Design Studio Lab, set up for the B.Sc. Course in Interior Design & Decoration is a large air-conditioned space with 30 adjustable Architect’s desks and a smartboard.
The institute’s library is well-stocked with books and journals covering fashion, textiles, apparel, computers, and management. It also provides Wi-Fi internet connectivity and reprographic and scanning facilities. The library subscribes to several international and national magazines and journals, as well as e-books and e-magazines related to fashion. The cafeteria offers wholesome food at competitive prices. Other facilities include loan facilities, opening of bank accounts, laboratories, sports facilities, hostel, additional support, industry visits, and annual events. The institute regularly invites experts from the industry to deliver special lectures on different topics and also conducts personality development programs.

Seat Availability | For the B.Sc FAD and B.Sc IDD courses at AIFD, each has an intake of 60 students. Out of these, 54 seats are reserved for the children of Army Personnel. Additionally, six seats are allocated for civilians from Karnataka. Out of 54 seats, 09 seats are further divided into 03 for Indian Navy personnel and 06 for Indian Air Force personnel. |
