Many defence families assume Sainik School admission works like any other school entrance exam, only to be caught out by its specific age rules and multi-stage process. This article lists eight facts about Sainik School admission through AISSEE (All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination), based on official information, so you know what to expect before applying.
- Conducted by NTA for Class 6 and Class 9 — The AISSEE (All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination) is conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency) for admission to Class 6 and Class 9 in Sainik Schools across India.
- Age limits are specific to each class — Candidates for Class 6 must generally be between 10 and 12 years old, and for Class 9 between 13 and 15 years old, as of 31 March of the admission year.
- Girls are eligible for both Class 6 and Class 9 — Girls can apply for both Class 6 and Class 9 admission, subject to the same age criteria as boys, though seat availability may vary by individual school.
- There is no cap on the number of attempts — AISSEE does not limit how many times a student can attempt the exam, as long as they meet the age eligibility criteria for that particular year.
- Minimum marks apply at approved New Sainik Schools — Candidates need at least 25 percent in each subject and 40 percent aggregate to be eligible for admission at the approved New Sainik Schools.
- SC/ST candidates have relaxed marks criteria at traditional schools — At traditional Sainik Schools, SC/ST category candidates are not bound by the same minimum marks requirement for the merit list, though other eligibility rules still apply.
- Admission is not based on the exam score alone — Beyond the written exam, admission also involves e-counselling, a medical fitness assessment, and document verification before a seat is confirmed.
- It is different from RIMC — Sainik Schools admit students only into Class 6 and Class 9, while RIMC (Rashtriya Indian Military College) admits into Class 8 and Class 9, with a much smaller yearly intake.
Getting the age eligibility right is the first and most important step, since even a strong exam score cannot make up for missing the age window for a given class. Remember that qualifying the written exam is only one part of a multi-stage process that also includes medical fitness and document checks. Always confirm the current year’s exact dates and eligibility criteria on the official AISSEE website before applying.
