On March 15, 2024, the Indian Army marked a historic milestone in its Defence capabilities with the formal establishment of the Apache 451 Aviation Squadron at Jodhpur. This event signifies a major enhancement in India’s aerial combat prowess, as the squadron is equipped with the advanced AH-64E Apache attack helicopters.

The Apache 451 Aviation Squadron’s creation is a strategic move in the Army’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military assets and improve operational effectiveness. The first set of three Apache helicopters is expected to join the squadron in May 2023, followed by another trio in July, reflecting a well-orchestrated plan to upgrade the Army’s aerial offensive capabilities.

This significant development represents a transformative moment for the Indian Army Aviation Corps, which has traditionally operated utility helicopters. The addition of the Apache, along with the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), propels the Army into a new chapter of aerial warfare, ready to tackle the challenges of modern combat environments.

The procurement of the AH-64E Apache helicopters is the result of a $800 million contract with Boeing, signed in February 2020. To ensure seamless integration of these helicopters, six Indian Army pilots and 24 technicians received extensive training in the United States, equipping them with the skills necessary to operate these sophisticated machines.

The induction of the 451 Aviation Squadron is part of a larger initiative to reinforce the Indian Army’s attack helicopter fleet. The government’s authorization for the purchase of 39 AH-64 Apache helicopters, coupled with the Defence Acquisition Council’s approval for 156 LCH, demonstrates a dedicated effort to strengthen India’s Defence infrastructure.

Why APACHE?

The AH-64E Apache helicopters, equipped with the latest technology and formidable firepower, are set to replace the aging Mi-35 fleet, significantly boosting the Army’s capabilities in assault, anti-armour operations, reconnaissance, security, and peacekeeping missions. Featuring advanced communication, navigation, and targeting systems, including an all-weather Modernized Target Acquisition Designation System and a Fire Control Radar capable of identifying both air and ground targets, the Apache offers unparalleled versatility and is ready for day-and-night operations, even in maritime environments.

India’s air force welcomed its first eight AH-64E Apache at Pathankot Air Base in 2019, enhancing its combat capabilities. Similarly, the CH-47F (I) Chinook, a twin-rotor heavy-lift helicopter, joined the Indian fleet, with the ability to transport 11 tonnes or 45 troops. Fifteen Chinooks are now operational, with the latest deliveries completed in March 2020. These acquisitions underscore India’s commitment to modernizing its defence forces and align with Boeing’s global network of Apache and Chinook operators.

Positioned strategically near the Pakistan border, the 451 Aviation Squadron serves as a powerful deterrent, fortifying India’s Defence stance along its western frontiers. The deployment of these helicopters is a clear commitment by the Army to maintain a technological edge and achieve operational supremacy in the region.

The inauguration of the 451 Aviation Squadron is a testament to the Indian Army’s unwavering commitment to Defence excellence and technological advancement. With these formidable helicopters now part of its arsenal, the Indian Army is better equipped to face future challenges with confidence and robust firepower.
